Innisfil moving forward with safety improvements at dangerous intersection

Work to improve what’s been known as a dangerous intersection in Innisfil is moving forward with plans to install temporary traffic signals, new pavement markings, and signage.

The Town notified residents on Tuesday the construction contract had been awarded, meaning work at the intersection of Big Bay Point Road and 20th Sideroad can get underway.

“The contractor is scheduled to mobilize in December 2025,” the Town notice stated.

Crews are expected to be on site weekdays and some Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., so motorists should expect traffic disruptions during construction. The Town noted a partial lane or shoulder closure is possible on both roads during this time, but confirms school bus routes and waste collection would not be impacted. Additionally, residents will be able to access businesses throughout the construction area, along with driveways.

Crews will put up new wood poles and aerial cabling as part of the work at the intersection. Officials anticipate construction wrapping up in March, weather depending.

“Every effort will be made to complete activation of the traffic signals earlier, but their works will be dependent on the timely delivery of electrical equipment,” the Town notice stated.

The Town took action amid pressure from residents who say the intersection, which has become increasingly busy with population growth, has been a bad accident zone for years.

South Simcoe police previously confirmed to CTV News steady increases in crashes at the intersection, with four in 2023, 11 in 2024 and seven as of July this year.

Officials said installation of permanent traffic lights would follow the temporary ones, along with an eventual redevelopment of the intersection, a project estimated at $200,000.

The full redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2028, according to the Town.
