Have you fallen for a cybercrime? They could happen at any time. This month is Cyber Security Awareness Month and this year’s theme is Get Cyber Safe for future you. “Fraudsters exploit weaknesses in old operating systems, browsers, and apps to steal personal information. Once they have your data, they can impersonate you to commit fraud by opening new accounts, applying for credit, or accessing government benefits in your name,” stated the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. Officials say cyber threats are constantly evolving, and so are the tactics fraudsters use to exploit people. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is reminding residents that bringing your devices up to speed can protect you from fraud. How to protect yourself “Keeping your devices up to date is one of the easiest ways to stop identity theft before it happens. A few minutes spent updating today can save months of stress if your identity is stolen tomorrow,” continued police. Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. If not a victim, you should still report the incident to the CAFC.
