Georgina creates a new memorial to honour soldiers

A new partnership allowed the town of Georgian to add new cenotaphs to its war memorial centre. Thu., Oct. 30, 2025.

In time for the Remembrance Day celebration, Peace Park in Georgina is paying tribute to its soldiers with re-envisioned monuments.

Improvements to the town cenotaphs was a joint project shared by the Sutton Royal Canadian Legion Branch 356, the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation and Veterans Affairs Canada.

“We understand the importance of remembering and paying respect to the people who have served our country. These memorials honour all who have served and sacrificed, creating a meaningful space for the community to gather, remember and reflect,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk.

The project entailed the installation of a new granite cenotaph on a new concrete foundation, in-ground recessed lighting to illuminate the five new monuments and custom Lest We Forget benches.

A new plaque and bench honouring the contributions of Indigenous veterans in military service will be installed later this year.

A public consecration ceremony will be hosted by the Sutton Legion on November 2, ahead of the Remembrance Day ceremonies on November 11.
