Georgian Mall briefly closed after suspected gas leak

Georgian Mall on Bayfield Street in Barrie, Ont.

Barrie’s Georgian Mall was temporarily closed Thursday morning after a suspected smell of natural gas triggered safety concerns.

Barrie Fire says it responded to the call and contacted Enbridge Gas, who took over the investigation at 509 Bayfield Street.

Enbridge crews were sent to the building’s roof to determine the reason for the possible leak. An official told CTV News that progress was slowed due to snow buildup that needed to be cleared.

At the time of the incident, no shoppers were inside of the mall. Only staff were present.

Workers notified employees and the public and closed operations while the issue was handled.

Georgian Mall has since reopened and shopping has resumed. Enbridge Gas says a section of the suspected system has been isolated. There is no estimated timeline for repairs.

Only one business, a jewellery store, remains closed.
