More country acts have been added to an already star-studded lineup on one of Canada’s biggest country music awards shows, with some coming off the heels of performances right here in Simcoe County. The second round of artists were announced Thursday to perform at the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards. Two of those acts have recently performed in our region. Among the newly announced performers are married country duo Thelma & James, who are nominated for five CCMA awards and fresh off the Boots and Hearts stage. High Valley, a headliner at Barrie’s Kempenfest earlier this month, will perform as well. The duo is known for inspirational lyrics and anthem-like vocals in a fusion of contemporary country and traditional bluegrass sound. This year’s top-nominated female artist, Tenille Townes, will also grace the stage. Townes is one of Canada’s biggest country music artists known for intricate storytelling in her lyrics. Also performing are Nate Haller, known for his hit “Backfire,” which features Townes, and alt-folk group The Strumbellas. These artists are joining the previously announced musicians including James Barker Band, a group with roots in this region. Taylor Abram, a guitarist and backing vocalist, grew up in Barrie. There will be even more hometown pride on the national stage with Central Ontario’s radio personalities Shannon Ella and Jason McCoy on Pure Country 106 being honoured, each with a nomination for Country Personalities of the Year. The awards are taking place in Saskatoon, Sask. On Sept. 19. CTV is the exclusive home of the 44th Annual CCMA Awards.
