Final day for lifeguard supervision at popular Barrie beach

Friday is the final day of lifeguard supervision at Johnson’s Beach in Barrie, marking the end of a busy summer on the water.

The beach will remain open to the public for the rest of the warm season, but there will no longer be lifeguards on duty.

City officials are reminding visitors to follow water safety guidelines and use extra caution when swimming, especially after hours or in the weeks ahead.

The city reminds beachgoers that tents or sunshades are not permitted at beaches and waterfront parks for safety, and to maintain sightlines for the rest of August.

Safety tips to remember at the beach:

Swim buoy lines mark the designated swimming areas recommended for swimmers. The city asks that you never underestimate the power of a current. Swimmers or waders can be swept away in an instant.

Always swim with a buddy. Buddies can monitor where you are in the water and can call for help in case of an emergency.

Get trained. Learning some life-saving skills, such as CPR and rescue techniques that can help you save a life or better understand the rules of the water. Courses through the city can be found here.
