Community mourns loss of Monty, Oro-Medonte’s beloved alpaca mascot

The community of Oro-Medonte east of Barrie, Ont., is mourning the loss of a very special member, Monty — an alpaca who became a beloved mascot and symbol throughout the township.

Monty first joined the community spotlight when the Oro-Medonte Chamber of Commerce was searching for a mascot to represent its ‘Shop Local Campaign.’

Thanks to Davidson Estate Alpacas and owner Janet Schoon, Monty stepped into the role with all four feet; he brought his charm, quickly becoming “Monty of Oro-Medonte.”

From billboards along Highway 11 and Highway 12 to CTV appearances, Monty was a friendly face encouraging residents to shop local, visit the farmers’ market, and take part in events like Mystical Lights.

Beyond the spotlight, Monty became known for his visits to schools, nursing homes, and local businesses. Members say he loved to take selfies with every smiling face he came across.

He even had the chance to meet the mayor.

“Wherever Monty went, people would light up and say, ‘That’s Monty from TV!’” shared Sylvia Stark, a past member of the Chamber of Commerce who worked closely with Monty.

Monty brought joy to everyone he met and left a lasting mark on the community. Over the years, he grew into more than a mascot; he became a companion. His presence helped highlight the strength and spirit of local businesses while also bringing joy to people of all ages.
