CAA warns of record call volumes in Barrie as storm strains roadside services

Severe winter weather is driving an unprecedented surge in roadside assistance calls in Barrie, according to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

CAA South Central Ontario told CTV News it is currently experiencing call volumes at four times the level of a typical winter day. Roughly 50 per cent of the calls are for tow services, while the remaining requests involve battery boosts or light-related issues.

With demand far exceeding normal, CAA is urging members to remain patient as crews respond to the most urgent situations first.

Prioritization

“At this time, we are currently prioritizing those who are in unsafe situations, as they are most at risk,” said CAA spokesperson, Nadia Matos.

The organization says it is prioritizing drivers who are stranded in unsafe or emergency conditions, while those in non-emergency situations (like vehicles stuck at home) may face wait times of up to a day.

In preparation for service, CAA is asking people to ensure vehicles are accessible. Driveways should be cleared of snow and ice, and streets must be ploughed to allow tow trucks safe access.

Demand continues

CAA expects the high demand for roadside assistance to continue over the next several days as winter conditions persist.

As a precaution, CAA says it continues to advise people to stay home unless travel is necessary. For those who must venture out, the organization recommends leaving with at least half a tank of gas, a fully stocked emergency car kit, and a charged cell phone with a charger.

Environment Canada warns that snow squalls bringing near-zero visibility due to heavy snow and blowing snow. Residents could see nearly 10 to 30 centimetres of additional snowfall.
