Bystanders hold down alleged thieves until police arrive

Charges have been laid against two people after the heroic efforts of bystanders and a loss prevention officer (LPO).

Police say officers were called to a Canadian Tire in south Barrie around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to the LPO, a man and a woman were observed concealing several items before exiting the store “without any attempt to pay for the merchandise.”

Police say the LPO and a number of bystanders stopped the pair and held them on the ground until officers arrived to place them under arrest.

No injuries were reported.

A 28-year-old woman is facing charges of theft under $5,000 and assault with intent to resist arrest.

Meanwhile, a 41-year-old man is facing an assault charge.
