The Barrie Baycats are getting set to take to the diamond this weekend, a little less than two weeks ahead of the actual season opener. On Saturday the team will be taking part in the third annual Home Runs for the Hungry Community Baseball Game. Multiple players will be split up into two teams, with the rest of the rosters being rounded out by various notable faces from throughout the community. “Last year, we had close to a thousand people out there, and we’re hoping to match that or surpass it this year,” said Barrie City Councillor Craig Nixon, who spearheads the game. Funds raised from Saturday’s game will go towards supporting the Barrie Food Bank. Nixon, who represents Ward 2, says the amount of demand facing the food bank has nearly tripled since the inaugural game. “When we first sat down with them, three years ago, they were helping somewhere between 2000 and 2500 people a month. That number now is over 7000,” Nixon said. CTV Barrie Senior Anchor Sarah Freemark and Dana Roberts, the anchor of CTV News Barrie at 11, will be amongst the players in the game.
