Barrie woman charged with animal cruelty after dog dies in alleged neglect case

A 23-year-old Barrie woman is being charged with animal cruelty after a neglected dog had to be put down.

Police say the investigation began in late July, after a severely malnourished Boxer-German Shepherd was brought to an emergency vet in Barrie.

Despite efforts to save her, the pet did not make it. “Regrettably, the dog could not be saved,” said police.

Officials say the Boxer had recently given birth to a litter of eight puppies— all of which are now in safe homes.

Police allege the woman failed to provide proper nutrition and veterinary care over a long period of time. She is now scheduled to appear before the courts to answer to her charges at a later date.

Members of the Barrie Police Service say they take allegations involving animal cruelty very seriously and remind all pet owners that proper care, including efforts to control the pet population, is a priority when it comes to pet ownership.
