1 of 3 teens accused in alleged robbery with a gun at Barrie, Ont. high school denied bail

Maple Ridge Secondary School went into lockdown Monday morning as Barrie police seized a handgun and arrested three teens.

A 15-year-old accused of armed robbery at a Barrie high school Monday morning has been denied bail and returned to a youth facility following a hearing in a Barrie bail court.

The teen, whose identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, cannot be identified and is charged with several weapons counts including robbery using a loaded firearm.

Barrie police said officers were called to Maple Ridge Secondary School Monday at about 9:30 a.m. prompting a 90-minute lockdown at the high school in the southeast end of the city followed by a hold-and-secure. The lockdown measures prevented anyone from entering or leaving the school as police searched for suspects in the reported armed robbery.

Two other teens, 17 and 16, were released from custody. The 16-year-old was charged with possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm and possession of a prohibited device or ammunition and released from custody hours after his arrest.

Loved ones of the 15 and 17-year-olds proposed themselves as sureties Tuesday afternoon in separate bail hearings before a justice of the peace.

The 17-year-old accused was granted bail to his mother, who pledged $5,000 under strict conditions. He is barred from communicating with the complainant and his co-accused.

The allegations against the teens have not been tested in court.
