Police in Charlottetown are warning the public about an ongoing phone scam. Investigators say fraudsters are using “spoofing technology” to make the calls look like they are coming from Charlottetown Police Services. Many people have reported the caller will identify themselves as “Officer Miller.” Charlottetown police say they do not have an Officer Miller on staff. The fraudsters then allegedly try to get personal or financial information from the victim. The reported calls show Charlottetown Police Services’ non-emergency number (902-629-4172) and the caller ID says “City of Charlottetown.” “Police will never request your personal information to verify your identity over the phone, nor will they use your financial information to verify your identity,” reads a news release from police. “If someone claims to be from Charlottetown Police, ask for their name, file number, and reason for the call.” Police say anyone who thinks they have received a suspicious or fraudulent call should hang up immediately and block the number, if possible. Investigators are also asking people to report the calls to Charlottetown police at 902-629-4172 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
