World Cup driving business for Halifax pubs as fans gather to cheer on Canada

Fans are gathering at Maritime bars to watch the FIFA World Cup.

The final whistle had barely blown on France’s 3-1 win over Senegal when Halifax pubs started to come alive.

What began as a quiet afternoon downtown quickly shifted into a familiar World Cup rhythm. For many businesses, the pattern has been consistent: steady stretches between games followed by sudden rushes of crowds as kick-off approaches.

At the Old Triangle Irish Alehouse, owner Brendan Doherty says the tournament has already made a noticeable impact.

“We’re already ramping up for summer, and to have a World Cup hosted in Canada is awesome,” he said. “To have so many games on all day, every day has been a real boost for business.”

Doherty says the busiest moments continue to come during Canada matches, but interest stretches well beyond the national team.

“Outside of Canada games, everyone is packed, and it’s quite the scene,” he said. “Even the smaller countries, you’ve always got a couple of tables around watching it.”

The pub has been adjusting for the tournament with themed decorations, giveaways and drink specials designed to draw in fans throughout the day.

Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub has also been seeing strong crowds around match times.

“We had five TVs going up here,” said Joe McGuinness. “We also have a pull-down screen. Soccer is huge in this pub, absolutely huge.”

McGuinness says last weekend brought some of the biggest crowds so far, with the bar at full capacity during key matches and fans spilling into nearly every corner of the space.

Video from Saturday shows the pub shoulder-to-shoulder with supporters watching games with multiple screens. McGuinness says that level of interest reflects a broader shift in Halifax’s sports culture, as soccer continues to gain ground alongside traditional favourites.

“I think soccer in the past 10 years here in Halifax – with the Wanderers and the Tides – people have embraced soccer,” he said. “Canada and the U.S. are embracing soccer like never before.”

Support for the Canadian squad has been especially strong, with fans rallying behind Nova Scotia’s Jacob Shaffelburg, the first player from the province to represent Canada at a men’s World Cup.

McGuinness says the tournament is also drawing international visitors, many of whom are choosing Halifax pubs as their viewing destination.

“There were people here on Saturday. They landed from Frankfurt the night before and were here to watch Germany play,” he said.

With more matches scheduled throughout the week and major summer events like SailGP approaching, pub owners say they are preparing for sustained crowds.
