Wind warning issued for parts of Cape Breton

A weather front is bringing high wind to parts of the Maritimes, including the Cape Breton Highlands where a warning is in place.

A weather front crossing the Maritimes is bringing increasingly windy conditions to the region.

This is the same system that triggered severe thunderstorms in parts of Ontario and Quebec on Tuesday. The high winds associated with the front and thunderstorms are linked to some power outages in those provinces.

The front isn’t having as big an impact on the Maritimes. Wind will continue to pick up Wednesday afternoon into evening. Peak gusts out of the northwest are expected to reach 50 to 70 km/h Wednesday afternoon and evening. Stronger gusts near 90 km/h are a risk in northern Inverness County and Victoria County in Cape Breton where a wind warning is in effect.

The warning cautions that stronger winds are expected Wednesday evening before diminishing overnight. The period of strongest wind is generally expected to be 6 p.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Thursday.

While the wind does diminish for Thursday it will still be quite gusty for both Prince Edward Island and eastern Nova Scotia, including Cape Breton. Peak gusts of 40 to 60 km/h are expected except near 70 km/h in the Cape Breton Highlands. The remainder of the Maritimes can expect a northerly wind with gusts of 20 to 40 km/h on Thursday.
