WestJet announces new flights from Halifax to three European destinations, one U.S. city

WestJet is adding more direct flight from Halifax to Europe.

WestJet unveiled a major expansion at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Tuesday, announcing flights to three new European destinations and one new stop in the U.S.

The new expansion, coming in May 2026, will include four flights per week from Halifax to:

• Lisbon, Portugal
• Madrid, Spain
• Copenhagen, Denmark

“Certainly, we heard lots of local demand around Lisbon, Portugal, and we’re just so excited to be able to layer these into our already existing transatlantic network to really bring more unique experiences for Nova Scotians abroad, and to also bring travellers from Europe into Nova Scotia as well,” said Samantha Taylor, CEO of WestJet Group.

“We continue to grow our presence in this dynamic city because it truly is our gateway to Atlantic Canada to Europe and beyond.”

There will also be a new flight from Halifax to Detroit seven times a week, which WestJet says will build on its partnership with Delta Air Lines.

“WestJet’s continued growth at Halifax Stanfield is great news for our region. These four new non-stop services will complement WestJet’s six existing European destinations from Halifax Stanfield, reinforcing our status as North America’s most internationally connected airport of our size and a key Canadian gateway,” said president and CEO of the Halifax International Airport Authority, Joyce Carter.

“Each new route strengthens our global reach, offers travellers more choice, and fuels economic opportunity here at home.”

The Halifax Chamber of Commerce says the new routes will be good for local business, too.

“I think businesses will be excited about this,” said Patrick Sullivan, president of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. “Any opportunity for new visitors who stay longer and spend more will be a great opportunity for business in the region.”

WestJet adds it will resume its seasonal summer flights on the following existing European routes from Halifax next summer:

• Barcelona
• Amsterdam
• Dublin
• Edinburgh
• London Gatwick
• Paris

The airline will announce its full summer schedule early next year, saying travellers can expect additional domestic routes and an increase in flights.
