SiRT investigating Cape Breton police officer after alleged fight at craft beer festival

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the actions of an off-duty Cape Breton police officer who allegedly got into a fight at a craft beer festival.

SiRT says the police officer attended the festival in Sydney, N.S., the night of Nov. 28.

“At the event the off-duty officer was speaking to an adult male, and an altercation broke out between the two,” said SiRT in a news release.

“Police were called and the male was brought to the hospital where he was treated for head injuries.”

Cape Breton Regional Police referred the incident to SiRT the next day.

The police officer has not been identified.

“Due to the injuries sustained and in the public interest, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation,” said the police watchdog.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia.
