Scotiabank Centre fire won’t disrupt weekend hockey games, operator says

A small fire at the Scotiabank Centre won’t stop two scheduled hockey games this weekend.

The manager and operator of the Scotiabank Centre in downtown Halifax says a small fire at the building on Thursday won’t disrupt two hockey games this weekend.

The fire, which broke out on the roof above the mezzanine around 12:45 p.m. Thursday, was quickly brought under control and caused minimal damage to the inside of the exterior wall, according to Deputy Fire Chief Brad Connors.

Events East Group, which operates the Scotiabank Centre, said the Halifax Mooseheads and Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) games will go forward as scheduled this weekend.

“We’ve conducted a thorough assessment and cleaning of the building, including air quality control testing,” said Dawn Delaney, director of marketing and communications with Events East Group, in an email. “Safety is a top priority for us, and we are happy to confirm that our scheduled events will continue as planned this weekend.”

The Mooseheads will face the Gatineau Olympiques at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The Boston Fleet will take on the Ottawa Charge as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
