RV spaces available to rent at Dartmouth campground again this winter

More than a dozen RV spaces will stay open at a campground in Dartmouth, N.S., again this winter for people who are homeless.

The province says it will give the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) about $160,000 to keep up to 17 spaces open in Shubie Campground.

Each site costs renters $250 a month, which includes electricity.

The province says services such as drinking water, snow-clearing, wastewater services and garbage collection will continue to be provided.

So far, eight people have moved in.

“We’re committed to offering more safe, supported options for people as the temperatures drop,” said Opportunities and Social Development Minister Barbara Adams in a provincial news release.

“Allowing a winter stay at Shubie Park gives residents certainty, connection and access to wraparound supports as we continue to focus on creating long-term, sustainable housing options for Nova Scotians experiencing or at risk of homelessness.”

The province adds campground residents must be willing to work with municipal outreach staff and add their names to the list of people experiencing homelessness in the HRM to connect to other housing options and supports.

Last year, the province gave HRM $145,000 for 17 sites.
