Operating rooms at Victoria General site to stay closed Tuesday after power outage

Nova Scotia Health says operating rooms will remain closed Tuesday at the QEII Health Sciences Centre’s Victoria General site following a weekend power outage.

The early-morning outage caused some inpatients to be transferred to the Halifax Infirmary Saturday.

At the time, the health authority said surgeries at the Victoria General were limited while backup generator power was being restored.

Nova Scotia Health provided an update on the situation Sunday evening.

It said, while all VG buildings have full power, work is being done to add “redundancy to the electrical systems supporting the Centennial Building.”

Until then, operating rooms in the Centennial Building will remain closed.

“Clinical leaders have met to add operating room capacity at the Halifax Infirmary (HI) site and prioritize and redistribute or reschedule cases booked for the VG, HI and Dartmouth General Monday,” reads a news release from the health authority.

“Any patient whose care will be rescheduled or provided in a different location will be contacted directly by their care team.”

Nova Scotia Health adds most outpatient care and treatments scheduled at the VG will continue.
