The Nova Scotia RCMP is warning the public about an emerging scam involving people posing as police officers to get gold. The scammers pretend to be with the fraud department of a major Canadian bank and tell victims their money is at risk from foreign hackers, according to an RCMP news release. The victims are then told to use their savings and investments to buy gold from a legitimate online dealer in Canada before giving it to a police officer for “safekeeping.” The scammers show the victims fake police badges and take the gold. “Similar frauds have been reported in other parts of Canada,” the release reads. “One instance of this type of fraud has been reported in Nova Scotia and is currently under investigation. “In this case, the scammers claimed to be RCMP investigators and presented fake badges that do not match those issued to RCMP officers. They did not wear police uniforms or drive police vehicles.” Anyone who may have been the victim of fraud is asked to call their local police or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.
