Police in Nova Scotia’s Victoria County are investigating a suspected swatting-type incident. The Victoria County District RCMP received a report from 211 Nova Scotia saying the service had received a text requesting help from a person with a medical emergency on trails near Ingonish Beach around 3:45 p.m. Monday. Emergency services, along with Parks Canada, responded and conducted “extensive patrols” of the area using tools such as off-road vehicles and drones. The search was called off after several hours went by with no further contact from a person claiming to be in distress. Police say there was no evidence to suggest someone needed medical support in the area. “Victoria County District RCMP now believes that the texts were a scam and potentially a version of ‘swatting,’ a false report about an emergency or serious incident meant to illicit a significant reaction from first responders.
