Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is meeting with Gov. Maura Healey on Wednesday to discuss trade and energy opportunities ahead of Thursday’s tree lighting ceremony. The Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environment Rebecca Tepper will also be at the meeting. “For more than 50 years, Nova Scotians and Bostonians have come together for this special holiday tradition to acknowledge the support Boston provided to Nova Scotia after the Halifax Explosion,” said Premier Houston. “Nova Scotia’s annual gift to Boston is a reminder of the close ties that exist between our two regions. It is symbolic of the important trade relationship between us and a reminder of all we can achieve when we work together on our shared goals and interests.” Nova Scotia has been sending a tree to Boston each holiday season to thank the city for their help after the Halifax Explosion in 1917. The tree-lighting ceremony takes place Thursday at 7 p.m. (AST) with around 20,000 people expected to attend and will be broadcasted to more than 200,000 viewers. This year’s tree for Boston was a white spruce from Lunenburg County. It stands 13.7 metres tall. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu attended the tree-cutting ceremony on Nov. 12.
