New phase of construction at Dutch Village Road in Halifax to last three months

Next Friday, crews will start the next phase of the Dutch Village Road construction project in Halifax that is expected to wrap up at the end of the year.

Work on the Dutch Village Road started in April. Crews will wrap up construction on the west side of the road on Sept. 19 and will immediately switch to the east side, according to a news release from Halifax.

“Dutch Village Road will open to southbound traffic from Supreme Court toward the southern intersection of Joseph Howe Drive and Bayers Road,” the release says. “Dutch Village Road will be closed to northbound traffic in the project area.”

This phase is expected to be finished by Dec. 21.

The work will close access to Deal Street and Andrew Street. Halifax Transit inbound and outbound routes 28 and 137 will be detoured. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

In June 2020, Halifax council approved the Dutch Village Road Complete Streets Functional Plan, which aims to improve safety and address transit gaps in the area. Some of the improvements include:

• a sidewalk on the west side of Dutch Village Road
• raised protected cycle lanes on both sides of the street
• additional pedestrian crossings
• improved connections to the Chain of Lakes Trail
• new accessible concrete bus stop pads
• on-street parallel parking spaces
• benches, trees, planters, waste receptacles and pocket parks
