New health clinic in Antigonish, N.S., will support 10,000 patients

A new “health home” in the Antigonish area is expected to accommodate more than 30 health-care professionals and support more than 10,000 patients, according to the Nova Scotia government.

The province says a health home is a clinic where patients receive comprehensive care from a team made up of doctors or nurse practitioners working with other health-care professionals, such as pharmacists, dietitians and social workers.

The new Antigonish Community Health Clinic is located in Greenwold, N.S., just east of Antigonish. It has 36 clinic rooms, three collaborative team rooms, and a family room, which can be used for conversations about care, infant feeding, and accommodating sensory needs. The clinic also has three patient education rooms, offices and a shared waiting room.

“New and modern facilities help us to recruit and retain providers, and this clinic will help support the current and future healthcare needs of Antigonish and the broader community,” said Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson in a news release Tuesday.

Several existing clinics and doctors in the area are relocating to the new clinic. Two clinics – Antigonish Family Practice and 220 Main Street Health – as well as an individual physician have already relocated to the new space and started seeing patients on April 7.

The province says the 220 Main Collaborative Family Practice will be in the new health home next week, followed by the Antigonish Primary Care Collaborative Clinic by May 31. Three more individual doctors will also start seeing their patients there in the coming weeks.

Patients will have access to a range of primary care providers, with same-day and next-day appointments. The clinic will have extended hours and virtual care options when it becomes fully operational on May 31.

“This health centre offers a supportive, team‑based environment that will not only enhance patient care but also make Antigonish an appealing place for new physicians to build their careers,” said Dr. Brittany Barron, physician co-lead of the Antigonish Community Health Clinic.

Construction on the clinic, which was previously announced as the Antigonish collaborative care clinic, started in July 2024.

The province says there are more than 120 health homes across Nova Scotia.
