Mandatory water restriction in place for West Hants, N.S.

West Hants, N.S., is under a mandatory water restriction order due to dry conditions.

West Hants, N.S., implemented a mandatory water restriction order Thursday.

The restriction, which is effective immediately for residents on municipal water services, has been put in place due to ongoing drought conditions, reduced levels of watersheds and lack of precipitation in the long-range forecast.

“This is not something they’re asking for because we have a lot of water. It’s something they’re requesting because we are in dire need of water,” said Kelly Corbett, a resident in the area. “And I think that as Nova Scotians who love to talk about the weather...this is something we need to be focused on right now.”

The three municipal water utilities include Hantsport, Falmouth and Windsor.

Under the order, certain outdoor water uses are prohibited, including:

• lawn/flower watering and use of sprinklers
• bathing/washing livestock and pets
• washing driveways, sidewalks, houses, all vehicles
• filling swimming pools or hot tubs

Some local businesses say they are doing their part to practice water conservation.

“Because every little bit will add up. We have two water wells that we put our dipping spoons in. And we’re constantly making sure we put them down to a trickle or even shut them off,” said Lisa Wilson, co-owner of Aunt Lisa’s Ice Cream Parlour.

But other businesses say this will be difficult for them to do.

“I rely on it a lot. I don’t know what I would do without it. I don’t have something to interchange with water. But I’m respectful of it,” said Bradley Eaglestone, owner of The Big Fur Grooming Shop, a dog washing service that uses about 100 gallons of water a day.

“Anyone found to be in violation of these restrictions may be subject to suspension of their water services, in accordance with the Water Conservation Directives in the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board Orders for West Hants,” a release from the municipality said.

Residents understand why the mandatory order was put in place but do not agree with the consequences of those who are caught violating the restrictions.

“I think that’s extreme yes. A fine, give them a fine. yes I agree with that but to cut them right off, I do not agree with that at all,” said Trevor Lavers.

Approved and authorized water haulers hours will be restricted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily effective Sept. 6.
