Man accused of importing opium after police seize poppy pods from Sydney, N.S., home

A 27-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly importing opium after police intercepted a package being shipped to an address in Sydney, N.S.

Cape Breton Regional Police says an ongoing investigation with the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency led them to execute search warrants at a home on George Street on Friday.

Police seized a package of Papaver somniferum, or dried opium poppy pods, and arrested a man at the scene.

Ramneek Singh has been charged with importation and possession of a controlled substance (Papaver somniferum). He is due to appear in Sydney provincial court on Dec. 17.
