Leapin’ lizards! Popular musical Annie coming to Cape Breton stage

The cast of Annie can’t wait to bring the popular musical to life at the Savoy Theatre this weekend.

It’s a musical that has been engrained in pop culture for decades and now Annie is being brought to life at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, N.S.

The lead role of Annie is played by 13-year-old Friane Gouthro of Glace Bay. It’s her first time doing live theatre.

“I’ve been singing since I was two, and I’ve been performing since I was six,” said Gouthro. “So, it was very easy for me to communicate and find ways to not be shy.”

Six-year-old actress Olivia Hunter, who plays Molly, says shyness isn’t a concern for her either.

“I have lots of confidence,” she said with a cheeky grin.

The Savoy Theatre’s executive director Pam Leader says, while people of all ages will enjoy Annie, the performance is ideal for children.

“They get to see other children on the stage. They may decide, ‘I want to try that,‘” Leader said. “People still want to come out because they’ll laugh, they’ll cry, they’ll sing.”

Actor Robbie Simms has taken on the role of Daddy Warbucks. He says the combination of a timeless classic, a live band, and historic venue makes for a memorable audience experience.

“I just know that whoever comes to this show, you’re in for a real treat,” said Simms.

“It’s great music, great comedy. It’s sweet, it’s touching. Families can watch it. It’s kind of something for everybody.”

Gouthro says playing Annie has taught her to follow her dreams.

“You’ll never know if you’ll get it or not if you don’t try,” she said.

The curtain rises on the opening show at the Savoy Theatre Friday evening, followed by a pair of performances Saturday and a final show on Sunday.
