Halifax is still dealing with low water levels despite weekend rain.

Halifax Water could implement mandatory restrictions this week unless the region sees significant rainfall.

“Unless we get some unexpected, significant amount of rain in the next few days, (we) will be implementing mandatory restrictions later this week,” said Brittany Smith, a communications advisor with Halifax Water. “Every little bit counts, but unfortunately it’s not enough to not be implementing mandatory restrictions.”

Late last month the utility said water levels at Lake Major and Pockwock Lake are still lower than normal. They noted there has not been a “significant decrease in demand” since a voluntary conservation request was issued on Aug. 5.

Halifax Water has asked residents to conserve water by shortening their showers, turning off taps when not in use and washing only full loads of laundry and dishes.

According to a recent report, the Halifax Regional Municipality has spent more than $80,000 supplying water to rural residents amid the drought in the last month.
