Halifax using temporary cleaning services at 22 sites as it looks for new contracts

The Halifax Regional Municipality is looking for cleaning contracts at 22 sites nearly a week after terminating its deals with Imperial Cleaners over what it called a lack of compliance with living wage requirements.

The municipality ended its 16 contracts with Imperial Cleaners on Feb. 28. Sarah Brannen, spokesperson for the municipality, said they have not awarded any new contracts yet, but they are reviewing requests for quotation (RFQ) for several sites.

“The Facility & Contract Services group was able to coordinate temporary cleaning services from existing municipal janitorial vendors for the sites affected,” Brannen said in an email. “All vendors have committed to be in place until we can finalize the RFQ process to ensure continuation of services.”

The municipality previously said it ended its contracts with Imperial Cleaners over concerns they were not in compliance with the Supplier Code of Conduct.

“The municipality’s procurement policy integrates environmental, economic and social considerations to promote sustainable and ethical business practices while delivering the best value for residents,” an email from the municipality reads. “This includes a Living Wage Requirement to ensure fair compensation for employees working on municipal properties.”
