Celebrating Kaiser’s: Beloved Lower Sackville, N.S., sub shop set to mark 50 years

Kaiser’s Sub and Sandwich Shoppe in Lower Sackville, N.S., is about to celebrate half a century in business.

One of the first food establishments in Lower Sackville, N.S., is about to mark a big milestone.

Kaiser’s Sub & Sandwich Shoppe on Sackville Drive will celebrate their 50^th anniversary next Thursday.

The family-owned take-out spot specializes in Kaiser’s subs, sandwiches, wraps and more.

It opened in 1976 and was acquired by Rick Baker in 1978.

“It was a growing community, there were five places to eat – we were the fifth when the store was opened up. And my wife of course helped out, (it’s) a small business that the whole family pitches in, both daughters,” Rick says.

“It’s a great community to live in for one thing and also to do business in.”

Customers can pre-order their subs over the phone, online or walk up to the window of the small shop.

“We’re very, very tiny. It’s like 500 and something square feet. But we maneuver around, we call it the Kaiser shuffle, so we’ve all learned to kind of maneuver in the space,” says Rick’s daughter, Ellisha.

Many customers have been stopping in for a quick lunch for decades, with the cold cut being the most popular choice.

“But we have lots of other options. We slice all of our meats here and also veggies every day, we like to make it as fresh as possible,” Ellisha said.

“They’re the best, everything, everything is fresh,” one customer told CTV Atlantic’s Mike Lamb.

“I just like the freshness and the different variety,” said another.

The Bakers say they’ve loved hearing from their loyal customers over the years.

“I often hear stories about how they’ve been coming since they were little kids or they were the first customers here in the ‘70s, so it’s that kind of stories that kind of keep us motivated and keep going,” Ellisha says.

Rick adds he’s grateful for the business’s success over the past five decades.

“I just kind of really get overwhelmed with how fortunate we’ve been to be standing here 50 years later,” he said.

“I’m just really, really thankful for it. It’s been wonderful.”
