Cape Breton’s Seal Island bridge down to one lane until June

Cape Breton’s Seal Island Bridge will close to one lane until June 5 for repairs.

Traffic delays are expected on a Cape Breton bridge over the next several weeks.

Seal Island Bridge, which connects Boularderie Island and Kelly’s Mountain, went down to one lane on Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic restrictions are expected to be in place until June 5.

The province says the work is to allow for the replacement of bridge joints.

Traffic control signals are in place, and the speed limit has been reduced.

The bridge, officially called the Great Bras d’Or Crossing, first opened back in 1961.

In 2024, the province announced rehabilitation work would be done on the bridge to extend its life by 15 years and give time to plan for a long-term replacement
