Three arrested for conspiracy after illegal border crossing from N.B. into U.S.

New Brunswick RCMP says three people were arrested for conspiracy offences last week after someone from China illegally crossed the border from Canada into the United States last spring.

Police say the U.S. Border Patrol reported the illegal border crossing, which happened near Grand Falls, N.B., to the RCMP on April 15.

The RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada launched an investigation, which led police to identify three people who were allegedly conspiring to bring people from China into Canada, with an end goal of smuggling them into the U.S.

New Brunswick RCMP, with assistance from Ontario RCMP, arrested three men — a 38-year-old, 24-year-old, and 34-year-old — in the Toronto area on Oct. 7.

The men were later released, but police say the investigation is ongoing, and they believe the men were part of a larger network involving more people.

No other details were released.

The RCMP is asking anyone who suspects illegal activity involving the border to contact their local police force or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
