Saint John adopts new outdoor fire bylaw

Saint John, N.B., has adopted a new outdoor fire bylaw for public and private properties.

There is a new outdoor fire bylaw for Saint John, N.B.

The city announced changes to the bylaw Friday. The new regulations for both public and private properties take effect immediately.

The updated bylaw only permits fires on days and times allowed by the provincial forest fire watch. Recreational fires must be contained in recreational units approved by the city. Open fires, including bonfires and campfires, are not allowed. Residents can also only burn clean wood or wood products. Chemically treated wood, garbage, and other refuse are prohibited.

Fires must be attended at all times with proper safety equipment in place, such as a readily available water source, under the new bylaw. Fires must be a safe distance from any buildings, tall grass, or wooded areas.

Anyone found violating any section of the bylaw are subject to a maximum fine of $2,100.
