The New Brunswick RCMP has asked the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) to review a fatal shooting by police in Matempec, N.B., on Wednesday. The independent agency is responsible for investigating serious incidents involving officers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The RCMP says around 5:41 p.m., members from the Tracadie, Neguac, Caraquet and Lamèque detachments responded to a report of an armed man in mental distress at a residence on Lavigne Road. “During the response, the man fired shots towards police, refused to drop his weapon and would not cooperate with police,” writes the RCMP in a news release on Thursday. “As the situation evolved, members discharged their firearms towards the man. First aid was immediately administered, however the man died at the scene.” The investigation is ongoing. For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
