N.B. RCMP arrest five youths, one man for firearm incident, flight from police

New Brunswick RCMP arrested five youths and one adult in connection with a firearm incident and subsequent flight from police Tuesday morning.

Members of Codiac Regional RCMP responded to a report of a firearm incident at a home on Rivercrest Avenue in Riverview, N.B., around 1:48 a.m., said a Friday news release.

When the homeowner came outside, he allegedly found an unknown man inside his vehicle in his driveway. When the homeowner confronted the man, he allegedly pointed a gun at him and fled in a dark SUV that was waiting nearby, said police.

Several officers were already searching the area for a dark Mitsubishi Outlander and a dark Jeep Cherokee that police said were spotted nearby that night. RCMP said the vehicles were reported stolen and had been involved in several flights from police.

Police located the Outlander a short time later and attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle fled at “a high rate of speed,” said the release. Police said they pursued the vehicle out of concern for public safety through Riverview and then towards Salisbury, where they spotted the Jeep Cherokee.

Members of Caledonia RCMP were dispatched to assist.

Police attempted to deploy a spike belt. The Jeep allegedly maneuvered around the belt, crashed into a police vehicle and went into the ditch, where it got stuck.

Two youths were arrested at the scene.

The Mitsubishi got stuck in a field near Fredericton Road and three more youths and a 21-year-old man were arrested at the second scene.

The youths were released from custody on conditions and will appear in court at a later date. The 21-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court onNov.14for a bail hearing.
