A man who barricaded himself in a home Sunday evening is now dead, according to the Fredericton Police Force. Police responded to a reported disturbance outside a Murray Avenue residence around 11:15 p.m. They learned a man had allegedly barricaded himself in the home with a weapon, according to a news release. At 1:01 a.m., police asked residents along the 30 to 40 block of Murray Avenue to shelter in place due to the police operation. The Fredericton Fire Department and Ambulance New Brunswick, along with members of the emergency response team and crisis negotiation team, responded to the scene. Several nearby neighbours told CTV News Atlantic they were woken up to the sound of multiple bangs. “When they broke a window, he started pouring gas and lit it himself,” neighbour Curtis Ward said. “Flames shot out the window. Smoke poured out. I saw him appear to come up to the front door and then fall.” Police say they found the man in the home and tried to resuscitate them, but he “succumbed to his injuries.” Police did not provide details on the nature of the man’s injuries. The operation concluded around 4 a.m. Monday and the shelter in place advisory was lifted. The mattered has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).
