Irving Oil faces charges with possible $1M fine over Woodstock, N.B., diesel leak

The Government of New Brunswick is laying charges against Irving Oil after a diesel spill in Woodstock.

Irving Oil and Grant Enterprises Ltd. are facing two charges that come with a possible $1-million fine over a diesel oil leak at a Woodstock, N.B., gas station in December 2024.

The New Brunswick government says the companies were charged with the release of a contaminant into the environment and failure to immediately report a leak or possible leak of a petroleum product from a system under the Clean Environment Act.

According to the province, the offences carry a potential fine ranging up to $1 million.

“Protecting the public and upholding the law are key priorities for our government,” said Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin in a news release. “We will continue to take appropriate action when potential violations are identified.”

According to previous statements from the province and Irving Oil, the spill was found at the Beardsley Road Irving station and was caused by a crack in a remote fill elbow.

An investigation later found diesel fuel was released from a storage system due to equipment failure. Roughly 180,000 litres of diesel were recovered.

Two phases of inspections at the site in 2025 found a total of 61 violations, including unregistered tanks and improper storage tank labelling.
