Moncton fire crews battle two back-to-back fires

The Moncton Fire Department was busy Saturday morning with two back-to-back fires in the city.

The Moncton Fire Department was kept busy Saturday morning with two back-to-back fires in the city.

Crews were called to the first fire around 6:20 a.m. at a tire business on Caledonia Road. Acting Platoon Chief Scott Brown said the fire was in a compound behind the business where tires were kept.

He said crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings. Brown also noted several vehicles were burned in the fire.

This is the second fire involving tires in the last week in the Moncton area.

“Tires do pose a special challenge for us. They’re constructed mainly of oil-based products, so they burn very intensely. They’re very difficult to put out,” said Brown.

A post on the Steve’s Tire Facebook page confirmed an early morning fire happened at the shop.

“We’re so thankful to share that our building is safe, the fire was contained, and only some of our used tire inventory was lost,” reads the post.

“We want to give a huge thank you to the firefighters who came out so quickly and worked hard to get everything under control. Your quick response and dedication mean so much to us, and we are truly grateful.”

There were no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Construction landfill fire

Later Saturday morning, crews were called to a fire on Weisner Road.

Brown said the call came in around 10:10 a.m. for a fire at a construction landfill. He said this fire is “more involved” than the tire fire.

Three trucks and two tankers were still on scene as of about 12:30 p.m. Crews from Dieppe and Riverview are assisting with water supply.

Brown said the wind and weather are not helping crews contain the fire.

As of 12:30 p.m. the fire was not yet under control.
