Tim Hortons’ return of Roll Up To Win cups leaves Maritimers itching to play

The popular roll up the rim contest is back after a five-year hiatus.

After a five-year absence, Tim Hortons has officially re-introduced their signature Roll Up To Win cups.

Starting Monday, Canadians can enjoy the café chain’s famous game where their hot beverage cups can be rolled up to reveal a prize.

“Guests loved celebrating the 60th anniversary of Tim Hortons with us last year and it inspired us to bring back some classic Roll Up cups this year for a limited time,” Hope Bagozzi, chief marketing officer for Tim Hortons, told CTV News in a statement Monday.

Roll up to Win first launched in 1986, but the company moved the contest to a completely digital platform during the pandemic in 2020.

That caused the game to lose a lot of its players, including one Halifax woman who is happy to see it back to its original form.

“I think it’s great that it’s back on the cup because I don’t think you should have to use technology to win a prize. Not everybody has technology, but if you can buy a cup a coffee and you can roll up that rim...there you go,” she says.

Bagozzi says the company is “excited to give guests the chance to win amazing prizes like vehicles, vacations and electronics – plus everyone loves winning a free coffee, donut or box of Timbits."

But for Ruben Koshy, a long-time Tim Hortons fan, the Canadian tradition means so much more than winning a prize.

“I think it’s a lot of childhood memories and something that I hold dear because when I was a little kid, I would look out the window to a Tim Hortons and always beg my dad to go,” says Koshy. “Just the action of rolling it up and the chance of getting something is really big for the Canadian public.”
