Messy start to the week in the Maritimes with heavy snow, freezing rain

A low-pressure system has brought heavy snow and freezing rain to most of the Maritimes. The messy weather began Sunday night and is expected to continue in some areas Monday morning.

Weather alerts

Snowfall, winter storm and freezing rain warnings that were in effect across the region early Monday morning have ended.

An extreme cold warning remains in place for northwestern parts of the province. Temperatures may drop to as low as –40 C between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

School closures

All schools are closed across P.E.I. Monday. Most schools are closed in New Brunswick and schools across northwestern mainland Nova Scotia are closed. A full list can be found here.

Government closures

All P.E.I. civil service offices in the East Prince, Queens and Charlottetown areas will delay opening until 12:30 p.m. Monday. All provincial civil service offices in the West Prince area are closed for the day.

New Brunswick government offices in the Fredericton area will delay opening until 10 a.m.

Power

At 1 p.m. Monday, there were 112 Nova Scotia Power customers and three NB Power customers without electricity.

There were three power outages in P.E.I. at that time.

Travel

Some Saint John Transit routes are not being serviced due to road conditions.

The City of Saint John has also declared an overnight parking ban from 11 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday. on the south/central peninsula. There will be no on-street parking allowed in the area at that time and drivers will need to park in lots on Vulcan Street, Peters Street and Sydney Street.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled several sailing cancelled several sailings between North Sydney, N.S., and Port aux Basques, N.L.

Mail

Canada Post says it has issued a red delivery service alert for New Brunswick due to the weather.

“A red alert means we are suspending delivery and not sending our delivery agents out or we are recalling them. Delivery will resume once conditions improve and it’s safe to do so,” reads a statement from the corporation.
