Maritime weekend: Cool weather turns to spring snow, rain

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell says the Maritimes will see cloudy conditions with sunny breaks on Friday with a chance of flurries or showers.

There will be fair weather to start the first weekend of April, but a weather front will bring another mix of snow, ice and rain into the Maritimes.

Fair Saturday

Saturday morning will start with fog patches in the region that will dissipate by afternoon. The afternoon will have a mix of sun and cloud as high cloud cover increases from the southwest. Wind will be variable in direction but light by Maritime standards, sustained between 10 and 20 km/h.

The day will start chilly with early morning temperatures mostly between -4 C and 0 C. Afternoon high temperatures will be 2 C to 8 C. Some of the coolest areas will include the eastern coastline of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and coastal areas of Cape Breton.

Weather conditions will change overnight Saturday into Sunday morning as a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain develops.

Mixed precipitation on Sunday

Sunday morning will start with snow still falling in northern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and eastern Nova Scotia. Southern New Brunswick and western Nova Scotia should have rain at that time.

By mid-afternoon or evening, northern areas of New Brunswick and Cape Breton should have temperatures above freezing with the snow turning to rain. Rain will clear the Maritimes late Sunday afternoon through evening.

Melted snow and rain totals for the Maritimes from the system look to range from 15 to 30 mm.

Expect a gusty southerly wind for Sunday morning. The sustained wind will be 15-to-30 km/h with gusts 30-to-60 km/h. The wind will become northwest afternoon into evening with gusts of 30-to-50 km/h.
