Snowfall warning issued for parts of N.B., wind warnings in effect for N.S.

People living in parts of New Brunswick are in for the first significant snowfall of the season.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for central and northwestern areas of New Brunswick.

The snow will begin Sunday morning and continue into Monday.

“The snow will be a prolonged event, with some melting and compaction occurring on the ground,” said Environment Canada.

The weather agency is forecasting snowfall totals near 15 cm.

“Highest amounts will likely occur over higher terrain where temperatures will be slightly colder,” reads the warning.

Roads and walkways are expected to be difficult to navigate as the snow accumulates. Visibility will also be reduced.

Environment Canada recommends people allow extra time for travel.

Wind warning

Other parts of the Maritimes are in for rainy and windy weather.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning for eastern areas of mainland Nova Scotia and parts of Cape Breton. This includes Guysborough, Richmond, and Cape Breton counties, as well as Sydney.

The weather agency is forecasting maximum wind gusts up to 90 km/h from the southeast.

Margaree Harbour to Bay St. Lawrence could experience wind gusts up to 120 km/h.

The windy conditions are expected Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.

Environment Canada said people should secure loose objects, and noted disruptions to services and travel are possible.

Ferry cancellations

Due to high winds, some ferry crossings have been cancelled Sunday.

Northumberland Ferries Limited said the 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. departures from Wood Islands, P.E.I., are cancelled. As well, the 11:45 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. departures from Caribou, N.S., have also been cancelled.

Bay Ferries Limited issued a travel advisory Sunday for the Saint John to Digby route.

It said the marine forecast indicates winds and a sea state that may create rougher than normal sailing conditions.

“Customers susceptible to motion sickness should be prepared with appropriate medication to make the crossing more comfortable,” reads the advisory.

The windy conditions may also result in restrictions of traffic on the Confederation Bridge, but as of 10:30 a.m. traffic was running as normal.
