The first rainy system of the summer season (summer solstice was 5:25 a.m. Sunday) is headed for the Maritimes Tuesday. It’s a low-pressure system moving out of the Carolinas towards Cape Cod. The weather system should then pass along the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Rain, drizzle, and fog will develop west-to-east across the Maritimes on Tuesday. Rain and showers lingering for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island into Wednesday morning. Isolated showers for the Maritimes by Wednesday afternoon. Rain amounts of 15-to-40 mm are expected for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and southern New Brunswick. Rain amounts of 5-to-15 mm are likely for northern New Brunswick. That amount of rain isn’t typically associated with any widespread water issues in the Maritimes. Some higher rain rates are possible in southwestern New Brunswick late Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening. Likewise, brief downpours are possible for Nova Scotia Tuesday evening and night. Visibility will be reduced with falling rain and hydroplaning conditions are possible. Wind isn’t expected to be an issue for most of the Maritimes. Northern Inverness County – Cape Breton will get some enhanced winds from over the Highlands Tuesday overnight into early Wednesday morning. Peak gusts from the southeast could reach 90 km/h during that time.
