Charlie Kirk’s death sparks new concerns over political violence

Charlie Kirk’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the Unites States and Canada.

The killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has left supporters and critics grappling with grief and disbelief, while raising fresh concerns about the rising tide of political violence.

Kirk, 31, was shot and killed Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University as part of his “American Comeback” tour. His death quickly spread across social media, triggering a flood of reactions.

Aris Lavranos, a supporter of Kirk’s, said he and his wife were shaken by the news.

“My wife and I had put the kids to bed when it happened and we sat fixated on the news,” he said. “The amount of blood that poured out of him was really alarming... It didn’t make sense that he could survive that.”

Lavranos said he considered Kirk a role model, not just for his political work but also for his presence as a husband and father.

“He wasn’t a policy maker. He was not a senator. He was a citizen like anyone else,” he said. “That someone would be killed simply for their beliefs, that makes this a particular tragedy.

“He was a really strong family man, and he has two kids. I have two kids. That closeness made it feel very personal for us.”

Giles Crouch, a Halifax-based digital anthropologist, said much of what people encounter online depends on algorithms that amplify particular voices. However, in the hours after Kirk’s death, he noticed something different.

“Even on the far left, people were sad about what happened,” Crouch said. “It really shows that, underneath all the noise online, most people don’t want to see this kind of violence.”

He explained that while social media often exaggerates divisions, most people still gravitate toward common values.

“Although we see extremism on both sides, the majority of people prefer non-violence, prefer an egalitarian society,” he said. “But social media amplifies it and it can come across as if the divides are much than they are in the real world.”

He said the lines between online rhetoric and real-life actions are blurring.

“Because we are so hyper-connected, social media is beginning to shape real-world activities and actions,” Crouch said. “That’s why you see it spill over into political violence.”

He added that social change is turbulent, and digital platforms have accelerated the pace.

“It used to take generations for cultural change,” Crouch said. “Social media has only been within its current form for about 15 years, but because it’s 24/7 and on every device we carry, it is reshaping society much farther, and not always in ways we’re prepared for.”

Artificial intelligence, he warned, could deepen the challenge.

“These tools can generate content that feeds into controversy, and we don’t always know what’s real and what isn’t,” he said. “The more we lose track of what’s real, the more it can drive conflict in the world.”

For Lavranos, the lesson is to resist anger and division.

“Part of the reason why he was so impactful was because of his method. Violence is not the answer but it’s also not effective and I think that’s one of the key things we need to take away from his passing,” said Lavranos.
