A new report from Statistics Canada says some economic indicators show the Maritime provinces lagging behind the rest of the country.
The figures released for April 2016 showed Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick had the lowest average weekly wages of the provinces at around $809, $857 and $875 respectively.
Newfoundland and Labrador neared the top of the list of earners, with an average weekly paycheque of about $1,007.
The Canadian average was approximately $956.
According to the report, Atlantic Canada had the four highest unemployment rates of the provinces in June 2016.
It said 12 per cent of Newfoundland and Labrador's labour force is looking for work, well above the national rate of 6.8 per cent. P.E.I. had the second highest unemployment rate at 11 per cent, followed by New Brunswick at 10.3 per cent and Nova Scotia at 8.2 per cent.
