The two Canadians being held in an Egyptian prison without charge have ended their hunger strike.

John Greyson and Dr. Tarek Loubani began a hunger strike on Sept. 16 to call attention to their imprisonment and poor treatment in Cairo's notorious Tora prison.

On Wednesday, a friend of the Ontario men said Greyson and Loubani had resumed eating solid food.

“They saw a doctor, as well as staff from the Canadian Embassy, today,” wrote Justin Podur on his website.

Greyson, a Toronto filmmaker, and Loubani, a doctor from London, Ont., have been held without charge since Aug. 16, when they were arrested during a violent protest in Cairo. The pair was passing through Egypt while en route to Gaza.

On Sunday, the pair was ordered detained for at least another 45 days.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and the Prime Minister’s Office have called for the pair’s release.

On Tuesday, Baird said government officials at the highest levels are working to secure Greyson and Loubani’s freedom.
