Blowing snow in Manitoba leads to road closures, school cancellations

As parts of Manitoba continue to deal with blowing snow, several roads and highways have been closed and some school divisions are cancelling classes for the day.

Shortly after noon on Friday, the province announced the following road closures due to poor winter driving conditions:

• Highway 5, from Grandview to Ochre River
• Highway 10, from Pine River to the north entrance of Riding Mountain National Park
• Highway 16, from Highway 250 to Highway 10
• Highway 20, from Ochre River to Highway 269
• Highway 24, from Highway 83 to Highway 21
• Highway 24, from Highway 250 to Highway 10
• Highway 42, from Highway 21 to Birtle
• Highway 83, from Russell to Highway 57

The province had previously announced these highway closures as well:

• Highway 5, from Grandview to the Saskatchewan border
• Highway 10, from Highway 16 to the north entrance of Riding Mountain National Park
• Highway 16, from the Saskatchewan border to Hwy 250
• Highway 21, from Hwy 45 to Hwy 259
• Highway 24, from Hwy 21 to Hwy 250
• Highway 41, from Hwy 16 to St. Lazare
• Highway 45, from the Saskatchewan border to Hwy 10
• Highway 83, from Hwy 45 to Miniota
• Highway 478, from the Saskatchewan border to Silverton
• Highway 482, from Hwy 5 to Hwy 83

The province noted the blowing snow is creating poor visibility. More details about provincial road closures can be found on the Manitoba 511 website.

The following schools are closed for Friday, Dec. 19, 2025:

• Lord Selkirk School Division: All schools closed and no buses running. Staff are not expected to report to work.
• Red River Valley School Division: All schools closed.
• Evergreen School Division: All schools closed and buses are cancelled.
• Brandon School Division: Buses are not operating outside the city but are running within Brandon. Alexander, O’Kelly and Spring Valley Schools are closed. All other schools are open. Attendance is at parental discretion if travel is required.
• Division scolaire franco-manitobaine: Several schools are closed including Gabrielle-Roy, Lagimodière, Saint-Joachim, Réal-Bérard, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Sainte-Agathe, Pointe des Chênes, Saint-Georges, Aurèle-Lemoine, Saint-Lazare, and Jours de Plaine. Buses are cancelled for École La Source, École Régionale Notre-Dame, École Gilbert-Rosset, and École Noël-Ritchot.
• Interlake School Division: All schools are closed.
• Prairie Rose School Division: All schools are closed.
• Garden Valley School Division: Schools closed and buses cancelled.
• Lakeshore School Division: All schools closed.
