A Winnipeg establishment has been named as a contender for best new restaurant in Canada. Last week, Air Canada announced the 30 finalists in the running for the prestigious title, including Winnipeg’s Snack Häus. Air Canada describes the restaurant as “wonderfully casual” with food combinations that are “clever, creative and totally unexpected.” Menu items created by chef Dustin Pajak include beer can chicken, torched shishito peppers and pepperoni meatballs. “This is food driven by pure appetite, designed first and foremost to make you want to eat it, and you know it from the first glimpse of the menu,” Air Canada said in its description of the finalists. Launched in 2002, Air Canada’s best new restaurant list aims to show Canada’s best “food worth flying for.” Restaurants are nominated by a national panel of journalists, chefs and culinary professionals. According to Air Canada, an anonymous culinary expert then embarks on a “cross-country tour to experience Canada’s most exciting new restaurants exactly as any guest would.” Finalists are chosen based on a “rigorous framework,” with the top 30 contenders announced in September and the top 10 revealed in November. Snack Häus is located inside Low Life Barrel House at 398 Daly Street N. The full list of best new restaurants is available online.
