The pool of Winnipeg mayoral candidates for the upcoming municipal election has shrunk to 13. Zachary Uminski confirmed to CTV News that he has withdrawn from the race, a change reflected on the city’s website. Uminski said he submitted his nomination papers on Wednesday but was told they didn’t contain enough verifiable signatures. According to the City of Winnipeg, mayoral candidates must collect a minimum of 250 signatures from voters whose names appear on the voters list. Nomination papers for the municipal election began being accepted on Wednesday and will continue to be accepted until Sept. 22. Uminski acknowledged he still had time to gather more signatures but said he chose to withdraw instead. “I would like to say this was a blast,” said Uminski. “This is my first time doing anything political. I had a lot of fun doing it. I highly recommend anyone else who is thinking about it to try it.” His platform centred on safer communities, fair housing, improved city permitting and support for frontline workers. As for whether Uminski might run again in the city’s next general election, he said it’s “definitely a possibility.” Winnipeggers will head to the polls Oct. 28.
